Danny’s family lives on a cattle ranch in Montana. He remembers the good times before his father joined the Air National Guard, which sent him to Iraq where he was killed. Danny struggles with the many stages of grief. His vivid imagination and Dragon, the horse his father gave him, exacerbate his pain but finally help him to accept the loss. With the family ranch in jeopardy, Danny learns a lot about himself, his family, the world, and the fellowship of suffering, even among the “enemy” when he has to move to the city and attend a large public school.
