Debut Novel Educates and Entertains as it Entices Boys to Read

Winnemucca author, Jan Young’s first novel, The Orange Slipknot (Raven Publishing), relates the unique challenges of growing up on a ranch in today’s West. Geared especially for boys, it keeps the reader engaged with characters and events from which they learn and grow as they find solutions.

A childish prank--Ben’s "great idea"--gets him into serious trouble with both his father and Fred, the crusty old cow boss on the Nevada ranch where Ben's dad cowboys. Ben must prove he can take responsibility for his actions. Even the reluctant reader will find in twelve-year-old Ben a hero to whom he can relate, and will be captivated by his adventures as he tries to walk in his father’s footsteps.

As Ben deals with stampeding horses, a mountain lion, and snow-covered hairpin-turns down a mountain road, the reader will learn about the culture of today’s buckaroos living and working in the Great Basin region of the western United States. A glossary of the unique words used by the people living in this area aids the reader.

Author Jan Young authentically portrays contemporary ranch life and cowboy culture—the setting, the language, and the values. She has raised two boys in the cattle country of rural northern Nevada where her husband cowboyed for years. With a BA in Behavioral Science from Pacific University in Fresno, CA, she is a remediation tutor, teaches piano, and with her husband, Jack, provides horse clinics, lessons, and training.

The Orange Slipknot is available in many fine stores as well as here. For more information, to schedule an event, or to obtain an autographed copy, call the author at: 775-625-3133 or visit www.janyoungauthor.com
